Is Online Casino Gambling Illegal in Malaysia?

In the beginning of 2021, the online casino industry in Malaysia was in full swing. The government of that country has taken some important actions to regulate its online casino industry. In a bid to protect both the online casino industry and the gaming public, the law was formulated to prevent any form of online gambling related crime from taking place in Malaysia. These laws have helped many from being involved in any form of online casino related crime. This will also help those people who intend to engage in online casino gambling in Malaysia.

One of the most important pieces of legislation that are implemented by the government of Malaysia is the Internet gambling act or Internet Gambling Regulation Act. This act states that all online casino operators and gaming authorities are bound to implement strict anti-money laundering and counter-money laundering protocols. They are also bound to screen all customer details that are provided to them. A wide-ranging and extensive set of licensing criteria have been established in order to ensure that only legal and properly regulated online casino industries remain in business in Malaysia. These criteria were imposed by the Malaysian Gaming Commission so as to protect both the online casino industry and the gaming public from any forms of online casino related crime.

The law on online casino industry and online gaming has also stated that all online casino operators are bound to ask their customers for their identification before allowing them to make deposits and play in the online casino. In case of any suspected cases of money laundering or any other related offense, the online casino in Malaysia have the right to suspend the accounts of the offenders. In case, if investigations reveal that these were done by the members of the online casino industry, the online casino in Malaysia will immediately close the account of these members. This is very important in order to maintain the trust of the gaming public.

Most of the online casino operators in Malaysia follow the law of the land and operate according to the same. However, some still violate the law. In most cases, this is done due to lack of enforcement or ignorance. As a result, online casinos in Malaysia are operating illegally and that the money they are earning from such activities is not legitimately available. To prevent this from happening, all online casino operators have to strictly implement anti-money laundering and anti-corrupting protocols. All records relating to transactions involving money should be recorded at the time of transfer.

A number of online casinos have been operating illegally in Malaysia. Some operators do not have the required licensing to operate a casino. Such casinos are illegal and should be closed down. Similarly, there are many operators who do not have the required licenses to operate video poker machines. They lure gaming enthusiasts with offers of free gambling machines. Once the gamer wins a jackpot, they usually run away and do not return.

Such dishonest operators try to fleece online casino players of their winnings by demanding unreasonable pay out from them. They resort to all kinds of underhanded and unethical methods to make money. Some of these include: selling gaming credits to players; requiring players to pay a fee upfront for registration or account opening; not refunding winnings upon termination of the casino account; not returning telephone calls made by players to discuss winnings; not returning tickets or casino vouchers and etc. This kind of exploitation of online casino gaming is illegal in Malaysia. To protect its customers, all online casino operators must comply with the law. To ensure safety of players, these operators have to register with the Malaysian Lottery Corporation (LTC).

The law on online casino gaming in Malaysia is contained in the General Laws of Malaysia (GP Malaysia Act No. 2021), which includes sections on gaming, lottery, sports and race, revenue services, lottery, etc. According to the GP Malaysia Act, every online casino is required to register and keep a registry of its players. All online casinos are required to maintain proper book-keeping and accounting records to ensure accuracy in computing of dividends and payments. The records of the daily transactions are to be kept confidential and all vouchers and checks should be destroyed.

Despite the existence of all such laws, there are still some operators who take advantage of players by accepting bets from them that they cannot afford. Such gamblers are bound to get into a fierce competition with other gamblers in the hope of winning some money. In order to make such online casino gaming businesses successful, some operators indulge in activities that are not legally permitted. They try to circumvent the law by accepting winnings from players even if they cannot afford it. The use of false information and false gambling is also not allowed under the law.
